:Why aren't engines built to have a perfect ring seal then? they are built with perfect ring seal...once the piston rings have settled in. (ie break-in)Why isn't the cylinder polished to a mirror finish then the oil would never be distributed to allow a friction free piston movement. the honing process puts a crosshatch sheen to the cylinder walls. this is where the oil is 'trapped' and essentially prevent metal on metal wear. it also keep compression up. without engine oil, motors wouldnt last 10 minutes. and why aren't rings produced with the same finish and perfectly round OD so that you don't have to worry about breaking in the rings? they are made perfectly round.
